Our AuthorsA Scary Cautionary Tale in the Old School Runescape Community
There's a horror cautionary tale in the Old School Runescape community that's sure to make a lot of gamers cringe, especially MMO fans. It looks like a top-level account with RuneScape Gold supposedly 20,000 login hours was hacked and then renamed to "SamePwEvrywr" or "Same Password Everywhere" just to screw in the knife.
It started a few days ago when a player named Diddeboy contacted Jagex developer support. Their Diddeboy1 account is pure tier 3 non-combat abilities, including Slayer, a rare ability for this account type and almost unheard of for them. The account peaked in 2021 after only 8,000 hours of Slayer training. Since March 12, 2023, it has been "hacked by changing the password". Diddeboy's situation was posted on Buy OSRS Gold Reddit, but the thread was deleted by a moderator.
Things got worse today when the same hacker apparently took over Diddeboy's Twitter account. Now-deleted tweets from Diddeboy's account claimed that their passwords were used across multiple platforms and lacked two-factor authentication. There's really no way to verify this, and the whole situation is a total mess, but judging by the fact that those tweets have been deleted and the account is inactive, it's at least possible that Diddeboy has regained control of his tweets.
Unfortunately, the damage has already been done. As noted by NotTheBeeze on Reddit, the account, which still tops the list of best gaming skills, has recently been rebranded. To make matters worse, their performance showed that the hackers improved the account's combat skills by destroying his skill modification. If you need RS Gold (buy OSRS Gold, RS3 Gold). I don't know what Jagex support can or can do to fix this situation. I hope the account will be restored or at least taken away. It's scary to see years of investment wasted and it's a serious reminder to protect all your online and gaming accounts in every possible way, from secure backups to strong and varied passwords. The response from the OSRS community has been mixed, to say the least, but it's sympathetic as countless accounts get hacked every day.
NotTheBeeze said: "The purity of such accomplishments is a little hard to bear, but I don't want my worst enemy to suffer like this."
“He definitely didn’t deserve this,” wrote another user.
“Love it or hate it, you will definitely feel bad,” said another.
“Let this be a red flag for people with bad password security practices,” commented another post about the challenge.
More good news from OSRS: One player recently spent 19,000 hours maxing out four of the most difficult characters in the entire MMO genre.
