How wrong Madden 22's Super Bowl predictions were

Feb-15-2022 PST Category: Madden 22

Every year, EA simulates the Super Bowl in its Madden video game series. There are times when the game can be accurate, predicting the eventual winner of the real game with Madden 22 coins a fairly accurate score. Other times, it could fail outright (remember when it predicted the Rams would win 30-27 in Super Bowl LII?).

If you're a Cincinnati Bengals fan, you're probably feeling particularly pissed off at Madden 22 this morning. This year, the game predicts the Bengals will win 24-21. While the score was almost perfect, it allowed the wrong team to win. How inaccurate are the simulations overall this year? Let's go quarter by quarter.

Prediction: "Cincinnati scores first, Jobro touchdown pass to Jamal Chase, but Rams answer quickly and Sonny Michele runs for four yards to tie it."

Reality: The simulation starts bad right away. In fact, the Bengals didn't start the game with a touchdown. Instead, the Los Angeles Rams were the first to suck blood by passing a touchdown pass to Odell Beckham Jr. Running back Sony Michel ended up underwhelming overall, only running for two yards on two attempts.

The Bengals didn't come home empty-handed, though. Cincinnati had a 3 on the plate after a stunning catch from Ja'Marr Chase. At least Madden 22 got the Bengals' big star in the first quarter.

Prediction: "The only point in the second quarter came before halftime when Cooper caught and scored from 32 yards to give the Rams a 14-7 halftime lead."

Reality: Both teams scored in the second quarter, but there's some realism to the simulation here. The Rams started the quarter with a touchdown, and Cooper Cooper did take responsibility for it (although it was an 11-yard catch). Unfortunately, the Rams had 13 points instead of 14. However, they did have a halftime lead.

The Bengals also scored in the quarter thanks to an impressive stunt game that saw Joe Burrow pass the ball to Joe Mixon Ty Higgins in the box. The final score here was 13-10, not far from Madden's guess.

Prediction: "Defense dominated the third quarter as Eli Apple intercepted Matthew Stafford's halftime touchdown to tie it at 14."

Reality: The Bengals comeback story was true this quarter, but it didn't falter like this. The third quarter started hot, and Jobrow immediately threw a 75-yard pass to Tee Higgins. Granted, the referee missed the seemingly clear mask, allowing Higgins to score from the penalty.

To its credit, the game was dubbed the Stafford Intercept, although Apple wasn't a hero. Chidobe Awuzie got the ball after Ben Skowronek missed a pass and hit the ball in his direction. That turned into a successful shot attempt that gave Cincinnati 20 points. The Rams got their own field goal to put them four points behind the Bengals in the final quarter.

Prediction: "The offense dominated the fourth quarter, starting with a Burrow-led Bengals touchdown that ended with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Tee Higgins. Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford and the The Rams tied the game late in the fourth quarter. Time was running out, Burrow led the Bengals on the final goal and Evan McPherson's 49-yard field goal gave the Bengals their first Super Bowl win in franchise history. champion."

Reality: This ends up being pure fan fiction in almost every way. For one thing, the fourth quarter was all about defense. Only one scoring drive this quarter, not the Bengals. The Rams will rally late in the quarter for game-winning touchdowns. It's also worth noting that Odell Beckham Jr. didn't change the game in the fourth quarter as he missed the game due to injury.

The Bengals would try to tie the next two minutes, but a fourth failed conversion left Cincinnati empty-handed. The cheap Mut 22 coins final score was 23-20 and the Rams won. That number was actually not far off Madden's 22 prediction of 24-21 (if the Rams hadn't missed an extra point, they would have hit 24), but the wrong team ultimately won.
