New World - What's been bothering me tremendously about this game

Nov-29-2023 PST Category: New World

I can totally relate to that "unfun" feeling in the game, and this is coming from someone who has nearly completed their Best-in-Slot (BiS) gear for their primary build. I've participated in a conservative estimate of 50 to 100 wars, constantly striving to stay competitive with the ever-changing meta and the constant flow of nerfs and buffs.

What's been bothering me tremendously about this game is its heavy reliance on New World coins as a currency. While the game initially offered more direct paths to gear acquisition through crafting, the current issue lies in the substantial daily and weekly gold drains. It's become quite tedious to grind for gold, especially when it's primarily used for inductors, chromatic seals, respecs, consumables (which, for some reason, are still consumed in OPR), and gems. More and more players are resorting to credit card transactions to avoid these immensely unfun aspects of the game.

The problem isn't merely a matter of time investment; it's more about the lack of fun in these activities. Players would likely be okay with grinding 1-2 OPRs or mutations to purchase the daily chromatic, but grinding for gold through gathering in this game is far from enjoyable. Many, including myself, are simply not interested in dedicating their time to activities that are miserable and devoid of fun. It's hardly a surprise.

Some of these issues were already present in the game, but previously, players could sustain their PvP gearing through PvP track and box rewards, upgrade their gear to 625 using umbrals, and generate gold through M10s. These factors partially offset the problems I'm discussing, and the daily 5k chromatic seal obviously wasn't part of the equation at that time.

Why does it seem like there's an exorbitant gold cost associated with every aspect of the game? It feels as though the game is excessively rationing the fun, effectively overtaxing every enjoyable activity to an extreme degree. This harkens back to the game's launch when players couldn't afford to use bows or muskets due to the exorbitant cost of ammunition. Healing food and potions were also prohibitively expensive, leading players to resort to carrying water and repeatedly drinking it for minor health regeneration between fights. The cost of owning a house was unattainable due to exorbitant taxes, among other issues.

Chromatic seals and inductors should never have been tied to gold purchases. They should have been attainable with tokens earned through OPR, mutations, or gathering, without introducing a gold sink.

With the current state of gold sinks and my efforts to work on different gear sets, I feel that once I can no longer afford my daily chromatic, I might just quit the game rather than engage in the tedium of grinding for New World gold. The only aspects of the game that I genuinely find enjoyable are mutations and OPR, and I'm not inclined to invest more "unfun time" into this game to accumulate gold.

If it weren't for the war payouts that help sustain everything, I probably would have left this gearing system behind a long time ago. I'm genuinely puzzled about how players who aren't compensated for warring manage to find any enjoyment in this setup.
