Our AuthorsThe developers of Runescape shut down the HD fan module before the release
Runescape developer Jagex has ended Runelite HD, an HD mod made by fans of RS gold Old School Runescape's popular open source client, just when the project was about to launch last Monday. The move in the 11th hour caused some Runescape fans to condemn Jagex’s decision and said they would switch to other MMOs.
Runelite HD developer "117" posted the news he received from Jagex on Reddit on Tuesday, which was later confirmed by Jagex in the company's own blog post. Runelite HD runs as a plug-in, which can make a major visual transformation of the basic Runescape, as shown in 117's Twitter. The mod makers added that they spent about 2,000 hours in the past two years to make Runelite HD.
"Yesterday we contacted the developers of known HD projects and we asked them to stop developing their projects because this is a project we are investigating directly," Jagex said.
Jagex wrote to 117 that the company's work on the HD version of Old School Runescape was "still in the early stages of exploration" but "progress is very fast."
"Of course, this means that any fan-led project that tries to change the look of Old School RuneScape is inconsistent with our own plans," Jagex wrote to 117. The school looks, so we want to make sure that our official changes will be the only ones available. I hope that the news that Jagex and the Old School team are taking this project seriously will excite you, even if it does mean that we need to politely ask you to close your personal project. "
117 stated that they offered Jagex a compromise. Once Jagex released their project, they would remove their project and let Jagex take "collaborative control" on the visual style of Runelite HD.
"They rejected it outright," 117 said. "I am very disappointed and frustrated with Jagex, and I am very sorry that I cannot share this project with you after a long journey.
117’s mod does not seem to violate Jagex’s guidelines for third-party customers, but Runescape developers stated that it will update these guidelines next week to include references to items that affect the appearance of the game.
The original Runelite developer Adam1210 shared his thoughts on Reddit. He said that allowing Runelite HD to continue to update Jagex in the future will bring net benefits.
"I also strongly disagree with it being added to the'third-party guidelines'," Adam1210 said. "Most of these guidelines try to define the boundary between [quality of life] and cheating-I think most people agree The current guide is a good representative, it helps to maintain the integrity of the [sic] game. However, there is no unfair advantage for improved graphics, it will only affect you when you enable it . So-this is actually just an abuse of the guidelines. So in general, this is a loss for all participants, and I hope Jagex can reconsider."
Some fans of the Runelite HD project have gone to a town square in Falado, the capital of one of Runescape's main kingdoms, to hold a sit-in protest similar to the World of Warcraft player protests held in July. Players can see criticism of Jagex’s decision and hashtags such as #Free117 in the text conversation of the buy RuneScape gold linked video posting. Another video showed more players "parade" outside Falador Square.
